I got my foot in the door started building my relationships, working hard and within 3 months I was promoted to the sales floor. I was originally hired in the food bistro. I worked at IKEA for a little more then 2 years and it was great. There is a lot more but, overall, management sucks. What happened when the manager showed up? The manager would usually apologize to the customer and make us, the employees, feel stupid for doing our job. It wouldn’t be until a customer would make a huge scene when a manager was called. We were also given the task to face the terrible customer backlash with the covid guidelines for the store. We were thrown into doing new job requirements and expected to pick it up instantly. IKEA always promotes teamwork and bonding but management was almost never there for us. So when customers got to a different department and were told something different, we would be in trouble. It got to the point where every lead had their own policy and so us co-workers were giving different policies to the customers. There was always new policies and guidelines every week and so many things changing. It got to the point where co-workers had to depend on each other for support because the leaders were trying to train each other. So many managers and leads quitting, getting hired, and being re-positioned. This location used to be a great place to work at, but now it’s a circus. I do wish cashiers had more of a voice and the ability to confidently stand up to awful customers though, I think a union would serve ikea employees well.Įver since covid hit, the store has went downhill. I love ikea as a company, and I'd love to work for them again in a non customer facing role. People constantly belittled us, made rude comments, and I even had someone yell at me until I was crying- over a scanning mistake. So many people came in without masks, we weren't able to deny service. I felt like I couldn't stand up for myself and my/my coworkers safety in this job. I worked cash, I processed thousands of transactions a day, had thousands of customer interactions daily. The reason I chose not to stay past my seasonal contract though was the customers. checks at beginning of shift and mandatory quarantine if positive. I even agreed with their approach to Covid, which included PPE, temp. The break room and lunch area are super well kept, they even have a "calm down room" with low lighting and comfy chairs. I loved the culture my managers were so kind and helpful. I worked for ikea during peak covid19 pandemic so my review might be biased.
